Breville JK85 Kettle

The Breville JK85 Chrome Rapid-boil Kettle

Everybody Needs a Kettle!

For the past few days our rapid boil kettle has been doing strange things, making odd noises and switching on and off. Rather than being rapi-boil it was mega slow boil. Time for a new kettle.

Our now deceased kettle was a Kenwood and had only lived for 2 years, so that was definitely off the list. Having read a great review of a Breville Kettle, this brand was top of the list. However, we fancied a stainless steel one to match our new kitchen. These were the features I wanted:

Find Kettles at :

  • Rapi-boil (essential)
  • Decent capacity
  • Water Indicator
  • Slow release lid (for safety).

The Breville JK85 met all these criteria all the above criteria I purchased it quick! Let me tell you a little about this kettle.

The Stainless Steel Jug Kettle
The kettle is tall and jug shaped and has a shiny body with a black handle. It's quite nice looking as kettles go! There is a hinged flip up lid for filling which is also slow release and prevents the contents spilling out rapidly should you knock it over. There is a clear plastic water gauge at the rear which shows how much water you have in the kettle. The maximum capacity is 1.7 litres (or 5-6 mugs full).

The instructions say you should fill the kettle by opening the lid but I find I can fill it through the spout if I dont turn the tap on too hard.

Inside the kettle is a filter to help keep any limescale out of your tea, particularly useful if you live in an area where there is hard water.

The kettle is cordless and sits on a round black power base. The cord can be shortened by winding inside the base. It is a rapid boil kettle and has a 3000W concealed element.

On the top of the handle is a button which flips up the lid for filling (if you're not lazy) and at the bottom of the handle is a little silver switch to flick to turn the kettle on.

So Hot
This kettle is fast and like most rapid boil kettles, pretty noisy when in use. It is great; it looks nice, it boils fast. However if you are one of those people who have to touch everything, then you may burn your fingers if you touch the outside of kettle. It does get pretty hot after use!

So Cool
This is the best bit. A cool kettle! I didn't realise that it was a glow in the dark kettle when I bought it, but it glows a lovely blue inside when it is switched on.

Summary
This kettle in great and I would give it 9 out of 10. It does make a disconcerting *ping* after it has boiled but this seems to happen after every boil and has not caused any problems to date. This kettle retails for around £50, but is available much cheaper at Amazon and Argos.
